Shadows and and anti-aliasing are the primary settings for improving frame-rate without reducing resolution. Most settings should be changed in the game menu, not Crimson. That said, there are some things that should always be enabled in Gaming > Global Settings. Surface Format Optimization = On.
Up until 1.36 or so, they would have really bad shimmering and aliasing no matter what game settings you used, even with Nvidia driver AA settings, unless you went to 400%. As the game AA improved even marginally, there's been less and less need to use 400% scaling.
