Thesteering rack on the 159 is known for failing. If you can hear a knocking noise coming from the steering rack as you turn the steering wheel, and/or the steering is feeling heavy, then you most likely have an issue with the steering rack. The steering warning light may also appear on the dashboard with this fault.

Seleniarecommends the 5w30 for the 147 Q2 (1.9JTDm) but then recommends 5w40 for the 150BHP JTDm on other models, a very similar engine was an option with the Alfa 159 so as you say there was a change in the recommended oil grade at some point. Castrol recommend a 5w40 for higher mileage engines.
1 Exhaust manifold from 2.4 JTDm, just cut last cylinder and weld plate. In future I'am planning to fit there EGT probe. 2. Oil feed line is from 2.4 JTDm 210HP, just shortened at hydraulic systems workshop. 3. Oil return line is made from different pieces: a) turbo -> middle section is made from stock 1.9 JTDm oil return line
